National Park Service Historian John Hennessy presents “Hut Holes and Bastions: Stafford’s Winter Encampment.”
Bring a lawn chair.
The National Park Service’s 15th annual History at Sunset 10-part series will feature eight programs never presented before. In recognition of the Centennial of the National Park Service, four programs will focus on the evolution of the park.
Sounds of Summer Concert Series

Kruger Brothers in Concert

The Kruger Brothers provide a unique voice in the world of folk, Americana and classical music. Jens Kruger is an inductee to the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame (2011) and is the fourth recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass (2013).

20th Annual Rappahannock Regional Soapbox Derby

Cheer for children 8 to 20 as they race down the William Street hill to become the next champion in their division.

Civil War Paddle
Saturday, June 11, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Meet at the Ely’s Ford boat launch on the Rapidan River, 10599 Elys Ford Rd., Spotsylvania Courthouse, Va.
Join Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) and National Park Service Supervisory Historian Greg Mertz for a daylong canoe trip, highlighting many of the Civil War sites along the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers. You’ll float from Germanna Ford to Ely’s Ford, through rapids, past eagle nests, and have lunch on a sandbar. Bring a bag lunch, sunscreen and plenty of water. Meet at the Ely’s Ford boat ramp at 8 a.m., 4.5 miles north of Route 3 on Route 610. You’ll arrive back at Ely’s Ford at about 4 p.m., depending on water flow. This trip fills fast, so register early. Minimum age is 12 years. This is a strenuous event. Backup date: next day.

American Volksmarch Association Walk in Fredericksburg

Walk with us to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the American Volksmarch Association (AVA). Enjoy downtown Fredericksburg, Va., and travel at your own pace along the Rappahannock River on your choice of 3-mile or 6-mile trails. Sponsored by the Germanna Volkssport Association.
Free to walk. AVA/IVV credit is available for $3, if desired. Anniversary patches will be for sale for $3.

National Capitol Squadron Open Hanger Day

Visit the hangar/museum building equipped for the maintenance and display of a fleet of aircraft known as the Ghost Squadron.
National Get Outdoors Day – Paddle Ware Creek and March on the Meadow

Enjoy a peaceful paddle to Ware Creek, where you’ll and your boats and explore the meadow habitat. Bring your camera to capture the vistas of Lake Anna and its birds.

Sunset Kayaking on the Potomac at Stratford Hall

See the historic Stratford cliffs from the Potomac River on this guided trip.
Ages 10 and up. No experience necessary. Pre-registration (required) closes 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 8. If the event is cancelled, the make-up date will be June 25. Cost is $25 for adults, $15 for kids 8-13.
Shakespeare on the Lawn at Kenmore Plantation

Shakespeare on the Lawn at Kenmore returns this June with four performances of Hamlet — one of the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature. The production is set in an eighteenth-century style, as if a young George Washington is in the audience. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Come early and enjoy your own picnic on the lawn. Tours of the mansion offered from 5:45 – 6:45 p.m., with performances starting at 7 p.m.
